The Kill A Watt EZ is a plug-in watt hour / kWh meter designed to easily measure electricity use by plug-in appliances. This plug power meter from the makers of the original Kill A Watt builds on the popularity, success and capabilities of the original product.

The newest model is the P4460 Kill A Watt EZ. It still displays all the same measurements of the original Kill A Watt product, but adds in your running cost and projected cost. It also features a battery backup so you don't use data if the unit is unplugged or loses power.

Now you will know how much that pesky energy hog appliance is costing you to run each day! Figure out the cost of your electrical expenses by the day, week, month or year.

You can also check the quality of power from your power company by monitoring line frequency (Hz), voltage (Volts) and Power Factor (VA)

Kill-A-Watt EZ is the newest and lowest-cost way of measuring your electrical use and cost.

Kill A Watt EZ

Watts it costing?

Watts it costingWhat good is it to measure your power consumption if you don’t know what it’s costing you?!

Don't be fooled by other products that DON'T measure cost, choose the Kill A Watt EZ - order online today!

If it's not EZ, it DOESN'T measure cost!

You can also purchase the Kill-A-Watt EZ as part of a home energy monitoring kit which includes the P4460 Kill A Watt EZ plus either an Energy Detective or Power Cost Monitor total home energy use monitor.

The Good:
Compact, inexpensive and easy to use. Feels durable. Screen has large numbers which make it easy to read.

The Bad:
No software for reporting or backlight, making the screen hard to read in low light conditions.

The Bottom Line:
A simple and inexpensive way to measure power use for plug-in devices. What it does, it does well and at the price it's a steal!

Full Review

Everywhere you go these days you can't help but hear about the rising cost of energy and the impact that that is having on our wallets ... and the environment.

As homeowners there are things we can all do to save a little energy. Hey, why waste your hard earned dough?! We call this home energy management and the Kill-A-Watt EZ from P3 International is one-half of your home energy management solution. (See the bottom of this product review for the other half.)

What is it?

The Kill-A-Watt EZ is a simple to use plug-in power meter which shows you the amount of energy used by - and more importantly the cost of - powering the appliance(s) that are plugged into it. The Kill-A-Watt EZ is not to be confused with its little brother (the 'regular' Kill-A-Watt (without the 'EZ') which doesn't show cost!

There are several other products on the market that do this - notably the Watts Up, Watts Up Pro and EML2020 - but at less than half the cost of next-cheapest competitor the Kill-A-Watt EZ is the most popular product on the market for a reason. When you are trying to save money it's counter productive to spend more than you need to!

So having recently made the decision to try and reduce my power bill I got my hands on one of these little guys and off I went to measure the power consumption of some of the appliances in my own home.

Packaging

My Kill-A-Watt EZ was delivered in a popcorn-filled cardboard box. On opening that, I found the Kill-A-Watt EZ sealed in a heavy-duty plastic carton - safely protected from shipping accidents and moisture.

The carton itself was a very professional consumer package which suggested to me that the manufacturer had invested some time and money into developing and marketing this product. This is a good thing! I have found from experience that companies who invest a little time and money into their packaging tend to be of a larger size and are - in my estimation - more likely to be around in the long term. This gives me confidence that if I have any issues with the product the company will still be there to support it in the future.

First Impressions

After I opened the carton I was pleased to note that the outer shell of the Kill-A-Watt EZ was made of a durable (gray) plastic - it feels thick and substantial, not at all cheap and flimsy.

Looking at the front, there is a large LCD screen at the top with 5 soft touch rubber buttons below that to control the operation of the power meter.

Flipping it over to the back I saw that the electrical prongs are near the bottom of the product which is useful for raising the screen up a little bit. (More on this later.) I also noticed the ETL approval sticker (cETL and ETLus) meaning that it has been tested by a reputable third-party and that it is safe to use in the US and Canada.

Plugging It In

So everything in place it was time to plug the Kill-A-Watt EZ in. I noticed that due to its size and shape that if you were to plug this guy into a double plug outlet you'd lose use of the second socket. Not a problem for me but worth keeping in mind depending on how your plugs are arranged within your home.

Once in, the Kill-A-Watt EZ powered right up automatically and the screen showed the voltage of the circuit.

Use & Operation

To change the electrical parameters, you simply press the up or down key and it will cycle through the electrical parameters - volts, amps, frequency (Hz) & power factor.

To change modes, you press the menu button which will move from, say, these electrical parameters to cost related parameters or energy metering data.

The energy and cost screens can be reset by pressing the reset button and the unit cost of electricity can be set once in that mode by pressing the pink set button and then using the up/down arrows to change the value. I set mine to $0.08c / kWh which is what I pay on my energy contract where I live.

For this test I am measuring the power drawn by a computer system - monitor and CPU. Once I get a few days of data I'll update this review and let you know what I find!

Points to Note

There are a few things that I would like to see improved on this product in future versions. First I'd prefer a back-lit LCD display to make the unit easier to read in low-light conditions. I'd also prefer the screen to be angled upwards - because plugs are usually quite low to the ground, with the flat-facing screen you may have to get on your hands and knees to read the display. People with difficulty sitting/standing might find this a challenge. If the screen pointed upwards however it would be a little easier to see from a standing position.

Summary

Overall, I really like this product. What it does, it does well. True, there is no software for recording power use over time (although it does have the kWh counter on the display) and it can't measure 220/240V three wire electrical appliances like a range, dryer, larger AC unit or hot tub, for example.

But then it's NOT designed to do these things and that's reflected in the price. If you need software, try the Watts Up Pro and if you need to measure 220/240V, check out the EML2020 but be prepared to take a bit of a step up in price.

With this product there really is no excuse why you too can't save money and become a little more frugal with energy use within your home. For the low entry price I would imaging the payback would be fairly short. And whether you're concerned about the environment or not we can all do our bit to help.

Power Saver RECOMMENDS THIS PRODUCT
January 20, 2010

The Good:
Easy to use.

The Bad:
It would be good if you could enter different "time of day" specific rates. I had to add a short extension cord between the unit and the wall so that I could monitor and read the display easily. This also avoids the unit blocking the second plug of a duplex.

The Bottom Line:
I hope to use it to track the most energy hungry items in my house. So far it has been great and I can see on one appliance how I can save ~$100 per year just by shutting it off when not in use.

The Good:
It does exactly what I was looking for, I like how it can be hooked up for even months at a time to add up the usage of something that is used irregularly.

The Bad:
it did take me about a half hour to completely understand how to use the interface.

The Bottom Line:
Very good product, for the price range it is probably the best option out there.

The Good:
Easy to use and illuminating for persons not knowledgable of Power comsumption and the operational cost. A valuable tool for the sale of Modern lighting products. Figures do not lie.

The Bad:
None detected .

The Bottom Line:
Could not have come at a better time . It permits people like myself in the lighting and electrical construction business an easy and fool proof way to demonstrate to property owners and building engineers the true operating cost of various types of light without the normal pattern of voluminous literature which people do not read anyway.

October 20, 2009

The Good:
Easy to set-up and use Ready to use right out of the box Gives usable, actionable information

The Bad:
Limited readability in some locations (can be corrected by using an extension cord)

The Bottom Line:
The EZ Kill-A-Watt device is easy to use and really does gives an exact reading of 'actual electrical use' for comparative analysis. For example, I found an older chest freezer is using $78 a year in electricity versus a same capacity Energy Star freezer using $22. I'd recommend this device for anyone wanting to know how much energy they're using.

March 21, 2009

The Good:
Best power useage gauge I have ever come across. Lots of features, and very easy to use. The only meter that I have come across that will show total energy use (not just power use). And relatively cheap as well!

The Bad:
Two minor quibbles 1) It can only be manipulated while plugged it, so it can be somewhat awkward to use if the outlet is in a difficult to access place. 2) The screen is not back-lit, so it can be hard to read in a dark corner.

The Bottom Line:
Despite a couple minor issues, this is an excellent and highly useful product. By seeing the energy useage rather than just the power (though you can see this as well), you can see the true cost of your appliances (eg keeping your TV plugged in over night or your computer on when not in use).
