How TED 5000 Works
TED 5000 is comprised of two main parts. The transmitter ("MTU") installs in your electrical panel and monitors the main incoming electrical power from your utility and broadcasts this information through the electrical wires in your home. The receiver unit ("gateway") plugs into a standard household plug and records the power metering information from the MTU.Seeing Your Power Use
There are a number of different ways to see power consumption. All TED 5000 models include "Footprints Software" which can be viewed by plugging an Ethernet network cable into the gateway and connecting through any Internet browser on any computer or laptop. You can also use your iPhone, smart phone or PDA to access Footprints and take your display with you wherever you go!This link opens in a new window.
Lastly, there are a number of free or very low cost reporting applications for the iPhone/iPod Touch that can display power metering information from Footprints!
But perhaps the easiest and most convenient way to display power use is to purchase a TED 5000 model that includes the wireless remote display. Because it's wireless, this display can be located in any convenient location in your home.
Several Models to Choose From
There are a total of 8 different TED 5000 models - most home owners have only a single electrical panel and will choose the standard TED 5000. If you have additional electrical panels and/or a solar or wind energy system, you'll need a TED 5002, TED 5003 or TED 5004 model depending on the number of panels/systems you need to measure.HINT: The last number on the end of the model describes how many MTUs (or how many electrical systems you can monitor)
Regardless of which model you choose, you can either have a local wireless display (models ending in a "C") or no display ("models ending in a "G")
The last number in the model is the number of MTU transmitters.
The letter on the end is "C" for models with display, "G" for models with no display. For example, if you need the base TED5000 with a display, the model number will be TED5000-C
Using a TED5000 for Sub-Metering
If you have a garage, shop or suite in your home that you need to measure, you can use the TED 5000 as a convenient sub-meter to measure the power consumption of that location! Simply connect the TED5000 to the electrical panel or circuit that powers that area and now you can track that power consumption separately from your utility bill. If you want to measure your own power use and that of a tenant, TED 5002, TED 5003 and TED 5004 models can do this for you.Metering a Wind or Solar Green Energy System
The TED 5002, TED 5003 and TED 5004 models can also be used to monitor the green energy generated by a solar array or wind turbine system. Simply connect one MTU to your incoming power from the utility and a second one to your green energy producing system and you're ready to monitor both green power generation, total power use and net power. The TED 5000 is the next generation to the massively popular The Energy Detective TED 1001.

Really accurate
The Bad:
None
The Bottom Line:
Would recommend to others
This unit does everything it promises.
The Bad:
After an electricity outing I could not get my footprints back and had to look for a new link.
The Bottom Line:
Highly recommended
Instalation was relatively easy to follow. I had 3 MTU on my system. One main, one solar and one on seperate meter for hot water
The Bad:
Getting the signal to the gateway was a little hard. I ended up connecting the gateway on directly to a plug mounted under the main box and runnibg a cable to my router
The Bottom Line:
Relatively smooth installation
I can view the usage from any where as long as I am logged on to google. I like how the report tells me if I am going over budget or under.
The Bad:
The display units is not in sync with current data. If I am watching the usage on the computer it changes as I turn on appliances but display is delayed at least 5 minutes.
The Bottom Line:
Excellent Product. The first month I reduced my electricity bill by $100 and heading to next month even more.
The data collection is accurate and frequent, and the software works well enough.
The Bad:
The installation can be trying. Line noise and other problems took me a couple weeks to work out fully.
The Bottom Line:
As others have noted, this is the only product like this that I am aware of. If you want real time monitoring of your electrical use (or, like me, your solar array), this is the product you need to get and you need to work through the installation headaches.
Very easy, no problems encountered following all directions.
The Bad:
Had a few problems with noisy circuits but also corrected easily. Gateway unit failed a week after flawless use.
The Bottom Line:
Worked as advertised and connected to Google Power meter without any problem.
Allows you to monitor your energy usage/generation in ways that is not otherwise possible. Probably the best on the market. Very feature rich for the cost.
The Bad:
Lots of software bugs. Expect to have to apply new firmware releases for awhile until they get all the bugs worked out.
The Bottom Line:
It's a great product and worth the money for anybody trying to be conscious of their energy usage
TED collects far more frequent data from my PV system than is possible "by hand" and makes it possible to diagnose system performance and catch problems (of which, I have had none that weren't caused by my utility's poor line voltage control).
The Bad:
The Footprints software has internal calculational errors (bad PF and occasional inconsistencies between short-term data and daily summaries). The Google powermeter is not useful for me because it requires 24/7 Internet connection(!) even though TED maintains a local data store that could transmit missing data during network uptimes.
The Bottom Line:
This appears to be the most cost-effective method at present for collecting household energy usage information. It will doubtless improve as the manufacturer (and Google?) gains experience and revises its software.
1. Ease of monitering my energy consumption. 2. Having downloadable records of energy consumption. 3. Ability to test Hard Wired items with the hand held display. 4. With the ability to monitor hardwired items instantly for consumption I have cut my power bill by 1/2 in the first month. 5. Ability to determine if my power meter is accurate.
The Bad:
NONE
The Bottom Line:
Excellent energy saving product everyone should have one.
user interface on PC, data hisorian, LAN accessable, small footprint, easy to install
The Bad:
Problem with noice immunity of AC power lines to comunicate with gateway from AC panel interface (MCU)
The Bottom Line:
Great prodyct that will allow people to determine the actual cost to run or not run specific appliances. Even more beneficial if you have time of day usage rates that are favourable on off ours.
See your electric consumption in real time and see how different products use energy See your electric usage history without having to run a computer Good tool to find energy vampires if you combine it with a kill-a-watt tool or similar Software has many features API is open enough for other people to write software that work with TED Active s
The Bad:
The installation might be more complicated that you first think. Software has bugs I had interference problems
The Bottom Line:
Having long term history with high granularity without having to run a computer to get it; was more important to me than the installation and communication interference that you might get instead
Seems fairly accurate, WEB page dashboard is cool. Easy hardware installation. The dashboard can be set up to read negative easily for those of uswho occasionally generate more power than we use.
The Bad:
Hard to set up communications, google meter doesn't work. Need better instructions, had to find solutions for Apple set ups buried in blogs and user groups. Power Bill Tiers not reset daily PG&E E7 TOU metering) Idle Power from mains to solar inverter reads negative at night. (It's only 20 watts though).
The Bottom Line:
Hardware installation easy, network installation daunting. Needs more customization features for measurements and data collection.
Love this little gadget. Easy to set up. Had some noise problem with the gateway being by my computer, but I picked up a noise filter and it fixed the problem. The ap for the iPhone is a great way to monitor what your house is doing while you are away.
The Bad:
The display is a little weak. Short battery life and all the info I can get on my iPhone.
The Bottom Line:
A must have for anyone looking to reduce their electric bills. I've found out some of the hidden power hogs and turn them off when not being used. Not much individually, but the cumulative effect can be quite a savings.
